Hello everyone!
I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Memorial Day Holday and joined in honoring those who served and those who died defending our great country and ensuring freedom for us all.
So, what’s going on in Silver Lake these days?
Here are a few events of interest to Silver Lake Citizens:
Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 6:00 PM, will be the citizens President’s Ad Hoc Committee meeting at the village hall. Right now our topics are centering on a couple of key areas. One is the financial aspects of our village and ideas how we can cut costs, increase revenue or do thing more efficiently. We are becoming more defined and the ideas presented are good ones. There is a good group working together so far and we ask that others who are interested come and join in, even if it is their first time joining us. Come and exchange ideas for finance or other topics that citizens can indeed make a difference.
We are still looking at down town beautification and economic development, children’s activities and other events of a public nature. Again, volunteers are needed.
Then we have our citizens volunteer committee for Fire Works. If you have not heard, a dedicated group of people are putting their thoughts together to figure out how to get fire works for this year’s Fireman’s Street Dance. No tax dollars will be used, so we are going to raise the money ourselves through several different venues: donation cans at local businesses, cash donations from business and citizens, recycle from local businesses, and recycle from homes. There is a very healthy market for steel, brass, aluminum and other metals. Old extension or appliance cords, Christmas tree lights, major appliances which don’t include those containing freon gases, are all examples. We will have citizens collect and bring to the old rescue shed on Thursday, June 16 (evening), Friday June 17 late afternoon and evening, and Saturday morning, June 18 all of these items. We still need a lot of volunteers to collect items, sort items, and go door to door in your neighborhoods to “get the word out”. Just like the good ol’ days of our parents, grand parents and great grand parents, we are banning together and making things happen ourselves. We don’t need the government to do for us, we can do it ourselves! Please come to the meeting to learn more about how you, your family and neighbors can make a difference. I am confident Silver Lake pride will show through for this event.
Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 7:00 PM, will be the regularly scheduled board meeting. This is your opportunity to address the Silver Lake Board of Trustees during the Citizen’s Comments portion of the meeting and stay to listen to what your board is doing on your behalf. For example, we will introduce a tough, detailed purchasing policy for the village, replacing an old outdated version from years gone by. It will be good for our taxpayers in that it requires competition for the dollars that the village spends.
The goal is to clamp down on spending, and asking each village employee and elected official, is this purchase needed, is the best deal I can get for our dollar and is it done with efficiency in mind.
There are many other topics on the agenda and your new village board welcomes your involvement!!
Bring your Silver Lake family and neighbors and fill up the village hall.
See you there!
Jeff
